Reinhard Gaupp received an engineering degree in geodesy, and his M.S. and Ph.D. in geology from the Technical University of Munich.
From 1980 to 1983 he worked as a research assistant in petrology at the Technical University of Berlin, then as sedimentologist in the exploration department of BEB Erdgas & Erdöl, Hannover.
From 1990 until 1996 he was professor of sedimentary geology at Mainz University.
At present he is professor of "Allgemeine und Historische Geologie"(Exogenic Geology) in the Earth Science Department of Jena University.

Major fields of research:
- Fault controlled sandstone diagenesis in rift settings (tectonothermal fluid flow, clay mineral authigenesis related to organic maturation, illitisation and significance of illite K/Ar ages, reservoir quality asessment.
- Sedimentology of saline lakes and playa-mudflats (Devonian, Permian, Triassic, Tertiary).
- Syntectonic thrust-top sedimentation (Eastern Alps, Cretaceous, provenance analysis, geodynamic evolution, sandstone petrology).
- Late Palaeozoic/Triassic evolution of the North German Basin.
